This is an extremely important publication that is virtually unknown to the general public, as it chronicles the horrific decline of Torah-life in Europe in the years 1870-1932 leading up to the period of the Holocaust. These 118 Letters appear in an anthology of the writings of the Chafetz Chayim compiled by his son Rabbi Aryeh Leib and published 1959 in New York City by the Chafetz Chayim’s son-in-law Rabbi Mendel Yosef Zaks under the title Kol Kitvei Chafetz Chayim.

Nearly two-thirds of the Letters are addressed to Klal Yisrael on Torah-topics: Hashkafa, Chizuk, Chinuch, Shabbat, Family Purity, Rebuke, appeals to send relief aid to fellow Jews in Russia, Shemirat HaLashon, Tzedakah and Chessed, kosher food for Jewish soldiers, and the Chafetz Chayim’s instructions regarding the leadership of the Radin Yeshiva after his passing. Approximately one-third of the Letters are addressed to the secular (Polish) government lobbying on behalf of the Jewish community. They include letters urging the Polish government not to pass laws that would destroy Torah communities: Laws that would require the State certification of rabbis, not to pass laws turning over Shechitah authority and control to local communities, letters to rescind Sunday “Blue Laws” and letters to stop the proposed calendar conversion to a ten-day week (i.e., three weeks in a month). The final two Letters are eulogies on the passing of the Chafetz Chayim in 1933.
